Considering to be a Surrogate again?

Why are there surrogate requirements?

The main goal of having surrogacy requirements is to make the journey as safe as possible for you and the baby. They protect your health and well-being by helping reducing medical risks and supporting a safe experience. Moreover, clear requirements foster trust and confidence for everyone involved in the journey.

What are the Requirements to Become a Surrogate?

There are 3 main categories of criteria, with the overview here on the side.

However, there are many more details involved. In our Surrogate Requirements Guide, we detail all the criteria into details.

Surrogates need to carry a pregnancy while bearing minimal risks for themselves and the baby. Therefore, they are usually required to be between 21 to 40 years old, with a healthy BMI (Body Mass Index) at 18-32 depending on the medical history. Moreover, you must have experienced at least one healthy pregnancy and delivery, with no major complications such as preeclampsia or preterm labor. This will help doctors initially assess how your body responds to pregnancy.

Surrogates must be non-smokers and free from illegal drug use, which includes vaping, recreational drugs and substance abuse. Carrying the surrogacy journey in a stable lifestyle is important, along with no serious criminal history. Candidates must also be emotionally healthy and be able to pass a psychological evaluation to ensure a safe journey.

Surrogacy requires time and commitment. It is important for the candidates to be financially stable and not relying on surrogacy as their main income. Moreover, support from family or a partner is strongly encouraged throughout the journey.

You can find all the details about the specifics of the criteria above surrogate requirements guide.

Are there any disqualifications for surrogacy?

Some conditions may prevent or delay qualification due to safety concerns. Common disqualifiers include no prior successful pregnancy, serious medical conditions, untreated mental health issues, high risk pregnancy history, smoking or drug use, or BMI outside the required range. These factors increase risk during pregnancy and delivery.
US Citizenship or Legal Residency
Surrogates must be U.S. Citizens or legal permanent residents. A work permit alone is not enough. Surrogacy involves legal contracts and insurance requirements that need a permanent resident status.
BMI (Body Mass Index)

Body mass index plays an important role in pregnancy safety. A BMI outside the required range may increase the risk of pregnancy complications.

You can check your BMI using our BMI Calculator. Learn more about Surrogate BMI Requirements and Why It Matters For Your Safety.

What are the Next Steps?

The surrogacy process contains 5 main parts:

  1. Applications
  2. Matching
  3. Medical screening
  4. Contract
  5. Embryo Transfer/ IVF

You can learn about the details steps of each part in our Process how to become a surrogate page.

Here’s what the application process looks like:

Start by filling out a quick online form to check if you meet the basic qualifications.

If eligible, you’ll move on to a more detailed application, sharing your medical history, prior pregnancies, lifestyle habits, and preferences.

We’ll coordinate your medical and psychological evaluations, then work to match you with intended parents who align with your values and comfort level.

Once we find the right fit, you’ll meet the intended parents — either virtually or in person — to build mutual trust and connection.

After contracts are signed, you’ll begin medical protocols, undergo the embryo transfer, and move forward with full agency support until delivery and beyond.
